Growing vocabulary

Growing your vocabulary is a vital part of child development. Research shows that children with a limited vocabulary can struggle to control their behaviour and make friends. The difference in vocabulary between a 4 year old child who has been read to every day and one who is rarely read to can be several thousand words. By the end of primary school, this can extend to tens of thousands of words if children don't read widely.

We carefully plan our use of texts to ensure that children are exposed to new and ambitious language in a variety of ways. Here are Yellow class reading/reciting the narrative poem, The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. It is rich in higher level and archaic vocabulary that once children have unlocked, reveal a beautiful yet hauntingly tragic tale.
