Winmarleigh Hall 2017

Date: 13th Feb 2017 @ 10:08am

Monday 13th February 10am

Excitement is building as the trip creeps ever closer. Hot topics are currently: who to sit next to on the bus, what to do if your torch batteries run out and can we swap beds to all have a go on the top bunk! Some children have had their bag packed since Christmas but for those who haven't, don't forget to pack a towel! You can find the final arrangements letter and kit list on this page.

Wednesday 15th February 2.15pm

We have arrived safely after a smooth journey. After getting settled into our dorms and eating lunch, we met our group leader (groupie), Ali P. She's loads of fun and has already taught us a wealth of definitely-not-annoying songs! I'm sure the children will regale you with the full repertoire when they return. Current favourites include the moose song and boom chicka rocka! We also played some games outdoors to get fully acclimatised to the bracing Preston wind and burn off the lunchtime haribos!

We are now on our first proper activities: archery, high ropes, vertical challenge and fencing (the thin sword type not the trellis type!) The children are buzzing about their experience and are really doing us all proud with their manners, attitudes and loud singing!

Check in later for another update and hopefully a few pictures (if the wifi is up to it!) Group 4 are doing fencing with their instructor, Snowball(!), and the ominous shouts of en garde are drawing my attention...!

πŸ‘‰ Your comments won't immediately appear on the blog as they need to be manually approved. They will appear eventually and will all be shared with the children.

7.30pm

Wow! What an amazing first afternoon. The children are rightly very proud of themselves for reaching and surpassing their targets on the high ropes activities. Lots of children gave the top log a high five on vertical challenge. Tash and James B barely gave their belayers a chance to keep their rope tight, they were so fast (slight exaggeration - safety first!)

The children have now all worn helmets and full harnesses and learnt how to belay - you can definitely trust them to belay for you should you ever feel the need. Just remind them ‘knuckle to pocket, reach round and lock it’. Our school was named belayers of the season so far by our impressed instructors!

We’ve had our tea now and everyone has eaten very well. Sam H scored the chicken 11 out of 10! We are now playing robot wars as a whole group. This involves a series of team challenges followed by some dressing up as robots and throwing things at each other! I think the use of ‘robot’ requires a bit of a stretch of the imagination! We’re good at that!

I have shared your comments with the children and when we get a minute of down time I will ask them to jot down a few messages for me to post. They are all red faced and giddy (in the best possible way) with Winmarleigh excitement at the minute!

As you would expect, the children are really making us proud and flying the Weston flag.

I will try to upload a selection of photos now to a Winmarleigh Hall 2017 gallery on the website. Watch this space...

Thursday 16th February 7.15am

Good morning! The children are reanimating at varying speeds after a very good night's sleep all round. Some groups were dressed and ready before the 7am wake up call whereas others needed a more persuasive wake up 'shove' from their friends! We're off for breakfast at 7.50am before activities including giant swing and PGL TV.

11am

What a beautiful morning! Just right for climbing up a large structure and inching sideways along a wobbly log! Apparently the view was very good from this top section of the high ropes activity. Jenna, Charlotte, Tristen and Michael from group 4 all made it to the very top but everyone pushed themselves and made the most of the opportunity to hang from a rope! We also showed what excellent cheerleaders we all are - sample cheer: "Give me a T, give me an R, give me an I, give me a S, give me a T, give me a...wait...what comes next...?!"

Other groups have been fencing and riding the giant swing. It's amazing what involuntary words and sounds come pouring from the mouths of children when the swing makes its initial plunging descent towards the ground! A fascinating insight!

Two groups are currently completing their first PGL TV session. This involves making a music track by layering up short sections of sound. There are some interesting drum and bass/full brass section arrangements emanating from certain headphones around the computer suite! Ryan just called out to noone in particular, "I hope there's a church organ...!" Once the tracks are finished, we'll head outside to film music videos to go with our tracks. Tomorrow, we'll edit the tracks and the videos before filming a TV programme to tie them all together. When your child brings home their video you may or may not decide it's a preferable alternative to the loud shouty repeat after me songs that the instructors have taught us!

Before we headed out this morning, we enjoyed bacon, omlette, beans, toast, cereal, porridge and more! Despite us all filling up fully, I bet we'll have worked up an appetite by lunchtime. The children are definitely making sure they get their money's worth!

Hey Harvey Jay,
It sounds like Winmarleigh is living up to your expectations and you are all having an excellent adventure. You will have to tell us all about the rope swing and the high ropes course when you get back home, it looks terrifying from the video.
In case you have had time to wonder, you are missing nothing back here at home. We had a very cold and wet night at the Soccer Centre on Wednesday night, although Charlie's team did win the mini football tournament. So he was more than happy.
Charlie & Mum say hello by the way. I think Charlie is secretly missing your company and 'voice' around the house in the evenings, although he wouldn't admit it out loud. I personally am making the most of the quiet;-)
Continue to have fun and don't forget how lucky you are.
See you soon and miss you loads. We can't wait to see you on Friday for all your war stories.
Love from Dad and the rest of the Wesseldine clan.
